Given our continuous scaling and adoption of a microservices architecture, I recently worked on some very challenging projects.
We implemented a Go microservice that consumes real-time driver positions from Kafka to detect possible deviation from an expected route using an ML algorithm. We also replaced core parts of our legacy platform with a family of microservices in order to enrich our vehicle and driver models and to expose more sophisticated APIs which address the more complex logic.

Problems in ride hailing cannot be solved with conventional thinking.
At Beat, we are obsessed with deep understanding of problems that affect millions of users and we employ state of the art machine learning techniques in order to tackle them. ML is at the core of our culture, becoming more important by the day. Our every day challenges include predicting the uncertainty of urban transportation demand and supply, understanding and modelling the complexity of optimal pricing and fraud, as well as examining and making real-time decisions on vast heterogeneous data sources.

Microservices is a whole new world. And we conquer it with excitement.
Moving from an inherited mega-service, that handled several money-related operations, to the world of microservices required a major redesign of it into smaller ones. Αt the same time, we had to ramp them up according to our latest standards and the guidelines we have set for a production-grade microservice. We introduced metrics with Prometheus, tracing based on the OpenTracing protocol and, of course, logging. Asynchronous communication via RabbitMQ was also re-thought and redesigned to improve semantics and the handling of error cases.

Working as a Data Engineer at Beat could not be more interesting.
Beat provides the freedom to explore and evaluate emerging technologies in such a rapidly evolving field; from applying anomaly detection techniques to streams of events, combining and analysing data from different sources, storing and querying them efficiently, to using functional programming techniques to abstract over batch and streaming pipelines. In my day to day work, I design and develop the data pipelines used for realtime data analytics and unlock the potential of applying learning algorithms to enhance our product.
